Dual Top Ten Finishes for Team MatherMotorsport!
It was a busy weekend for Team MatherMotorsport at Nelson ledges Raceway for the first dual national held at the track. Both the Mahoning Valley and the Neohio regions of the SCCA held races on Sunday and Monday. Nelson Ledges is considered to be one of, if not the fastest 2.0 mile road course in the United States, with SpecMiata lap times averaging over 90 mph.
The weekend started out on Friday with qualifying. Phil Mather was right up to speed posting lap times equal to his previous best times at Nelson Ledges. Final qualifying was held on Saturday, and Mather positioned the CG-Lock / Royal Purple SpecMiata in a solid fifth position in class for both races.
Sunday's race started out with excitement as Mather jumped to fourth place by turn one. He had the top three cars in sight for most of the race and then began to battle with the fifth place car. A slight mistake caused Phil to drop a couple of tires off of the track surface while entering the front straight allowing the fifth place car to pass, and he held on to fifth position for the remainder of the race.
On Monday, the race start was even more chaotic. There was a lot of nose to tail bumping even before the green flag waved as people were trying to get a jump on the start. By turn five of the 13 turn racetrack, the field was already under a full course caution. The SpecMiata immediately behind Mather had left the track in turn four and wound up on its roof after bouncing off of the tirewall. The driver was not injured and after a couple laps of cleanup the race resumed. After a hard fought battle and a little bit of trading paint, Mather brought home a sixth place finish.
Team MatherMotorsport's next event will be June 1st at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.
