Podium Finish for Team MatherMotorsport!
After a long break in the action, Team MatherMotorsport was back at the track this weekend for another national race.  The break was spent making improvements to the racecar, and Mather working hard at the gym keeping himself in peak physical condition.

Race Engineering has continued their support of Team MatherMotorsport and refreshed the engine to keep it producing maximum horsepower.  Royal Purple XPR racing oil is used to protect the inventment in the engine and rest of the drivetrain.

It was a great weekend for Team MatherMotorsport and Phil Mather at the Dog Days of Summer Nationals at Grattan Raceway.

Friday was a test and tune day, but it was a bit different than normal.  Instead of concentrating on the racecar tuning, Mather was tuning himself with the help of Pete Halsmer, a recently retired professional racecar driver who has won many championships in many different types of racecars.  Mather met Pete while working on the Honda of America Motorola Cup endurance racing team pit crew in 2000.  Pete was there to help "tune the nut behind the wheel" giving Phil advice and helping fine tune his driving skills.  Throughout the day, Mather was able to drop over one second per lap.

Saturday's qualifying sessions went even better, with Mather dropping another second per lap off of his fast time.  He put the CG-Lock / Royal Purple in fifth position on the grid.

On race day, Mather got an excellent start and gained two positions by turn one.  He was right on the back bumper of second place for several laps, with fourth place right behind him.  On lap 5 of the 23 lap race, Mather jumped into second position when the car in front had difficulty exiting a turn.  He held second place until lap 10, when he was coming up on slower, out of class traffic in a high speed turn that leads to a series of slower speed S-turns.  While trying to avoid the cars in front, Mather spun and lost two positions.  No damage was done and Mather continued in fourth position.  He regained third when the car in front had mechanical problems and had to pull off track.  With two laps to go, Mather had second place in his sights (he had been gaining at a rate of over one second per lap).  Unfortunately, entering the hairpin turn, the car stalled due to fuel sloshing away from the fuel pump.  Mather had to slow and begin to drive conservatively to save fuel.  He was able to finsh the race in third position for his best national finish ever!

Thanks to Pete Halsmer for helping Phil tune himself up behind the wheel of the Team MatherMotorsport CG-Lock / Royal Purple SpecMiata.  Special  thanks to Bruce Mather (Phil's Dad)for helping with car maintenance and crew chief duties throughout the racing season!

Phil's next race will be in Joliet, Illinois at the Autobahn Country Club August 17th.  This will be the last regular national race of the season before the national championships in Topeka, Kansas in October.
